The Dragon swim team is at it again! The team traveled to Whitehouse for a dual meet versus the Whitehouse Wildcats on Thursday, November 9. The Dragons really showed up and showed off, beating the Wildcats at their home pool. The team had great swims overall and there were many personal best times in events.

Swimmers of the meet were sophomores Grant Copen and Lexa Willardson. Both swimmers are hard workers and performed with their best times at the meet. They both bring passion, determination, and competitiveness to the team and they are loved by those around them.

“I love swimming because I’m good at the speed element of it,” Copen said. “I also love having Coach Scroggins as my coach.”

Copen has been swimming since he was 7 years old when his mom got him into it. His favorite part of being on the team is the atmosphere and how close the team is. His favorite memory from swim is watching Alister Jackson break the 200 freestyle record last season.

“I love the atmosphere and how it pushes you to be better,” Willardson said. “It gives me something to work toward.”

Willardson has been swimming since the 7th grade and started with the middle school program led by head high school coach Carrie Scroggins. She would go to her older sisters’ swim events in middle school and realized it was something she wanted to do. Her favorite memory from swim is at the senior bonfire her freshman year, when they dumped sweet tea all over former teammate and 2023 graduate, Ian Hodge.

“I saw how supportive Coach Scroggins was, and the great atmosphere of the team,” Willardson said. “I’ve never really thought of doing anything else.”
