Small Favors by Erin A. Craig
I am emotionally scarred after reading this book. I have read Erin A. Craig’s other book, House of Salt and Sorrows, and I absolutely loved it. She definitely went above and beyond my expectations with this one as well: it is beautifully crafted with just the right amount of spookiness. One of my only problems was that I saw it advertised a lot as being a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, which I don’t really agree with. You don’t really see the Rumpelstiltskin similarities until the last five-ish chapters. It does have many aspects of the story, but you don’t really make the connection with it until the very end. I will say, it gets very dark towards the end, and I felt like it ended very abruptly but somehow also wrapped things up. I read it in a couple of hours because I was testing, had tons of time to kill, and as a result, was emotionally unwell after finishing it. Overall I give it a 4.5/5 and this is definitely one I recommend.
