Last week the teachers and student body celebrated Spirit Week in preparation for the football game against the Lufkin High School Panthers. Days included, Toddler Day (Pamper the Panthers), 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s day (Throwback the Panthers), Construction Day (Taking out the trash), Hawaiian Day (Aloha Panthers), and Senior Citizen Day (Retire the Panthers).
“I really liked Hawaiian Day. I loved wearing the colorful leis because it brightened up the halls and it was easy to find things to dress up with,” junior Liam Rahman said. ‘I didn’t even have dress-up stuff at first but someone gave me a lei to use.”
Spirit Week gives students the opportunity to make new friends and bond over something as small as a Hawaiian Lei.
“Walking through the halls and seeing outfits that weren’t covered by black hoodies and jackets was a nice change,” senior Emma Welsh said.
Even though students are the main focus of Spirit Week, teachers also get really into dressing up along with the kids.
“Mrs. Dinbali’s costume for Senior Citizen Day was off the chain,” AP Environmental Science teacher Mr. Guillory said. “She had a wig, glasses, and a walker. She had a really old vibe to her and her spirit was very vibrant.”
Spirit Week boosts the overall morale of the student body and helps motivate the football players to play their best.
“The spirit week got us in the mood to put our all into this game. The little things like the outfits and the new class cheer at the pep rally were overall really exciting,” football player Bryan Granados said. “Seeing the school come together and get excited for the game regardless of the outcome was really fun and exciting to see.”
Spirit Week also helps the students and teachers to remember the football games on Fridays. Having them dress up in fun ways, helps them get excited for the games on Fridays.
“ I think that spirit weeks bring the student body together. I sometimes joke with friends that people don’t even know we have a game on Fridays and are unaware of a lot,” senior Emma Welsh said. “During spirit week, people got excited to go to school with their fun and different expressive outfits, which made them recruit friends to join them. By the time Friday comes around, people have had a lot of fun all week, and now are hyped up for the game.”
