Homecoming has come and gone, with it, the 15th annual Black v Gold swim competition. Every year, the swim team hosts an intra-squad competition that includes the categories of water polo, swim, and spirit. Teams are also given points for the number of swim alumni who attend the events. The overall winner gets bragging rights for the year. This year, the gold team took home the win for the second year in a row.
“Our hope is that it creates some spirit throughout the whole school,” Head Swim Coach Carrie Scroggins said. “By putting up decorations at the school, it gets kids asking questions and getting excited about the event.”
Both teams hung posters inside classrooms and in the halls. A QR code was also posted to allow the student body to vote for the team they believed deserved the spirit points. In the end, gold won the spirit competition.
“The hope is that it draws more people into it,” Scroggins said. “We want to get people excited about things going into the school.”
The black team did not give up without a fight. Black team won girls water polo and swim, and the alumni attendance was a tie.
“There were no school records broken at this competition,” Scroggins said. “But there are definitely some on the horizon.”
During the competition, team captains stay on the lookout for standout swimmers who are named “swimmers of the meet.” Swimmers of the meet for Saturday were junior, Mia Weems of the black team, and freshman, Hensley Hairston of the gold team.
“They’re chosen based on their involvement, their spirit, their water polo play, and their swimming,” Scroggins said.
Two other swimmers that had a breakout meet were sophomore, Amory Cooper of the black team, and freshman, Kylie Cook of the black team.
“The two halves of the team generate so much excitement, and they put so much into the whole event,” Scroggins said. “By the end of it, we realize how much stronger we are together and how capable we are, and it gives us more confidence going forward.”
Swim travels today to Tyler for their first whole-team meet against Tyler Legacy & Keller Timber Creek. The meet start time is 4:45 pm.
