The Dragons and Lady Dragons Water Polo teams competed for the district title on Oct. 1 in North Forney. The boys came away as district champions, and the girls came away as district runner-up.
“We definitely have the best team we’ve ever had,” Coach Carrie Scroggins said. “I feel like our chances are better than they have been in the past, and so we’re excited to play some good competition.”
The teams made program history. This is the first time they have placed first and second in the district.
“I was very proud of us,” sophomore Livia Whitaker said. “Most of our district is 6A, and we’ve come a long way since the program started.”
The water polo team was founded in 2023, and the players began without knowledge of the sport. The team had to start from the ground up, learning the rules and how to play.
“For me, it was a big deal because my freshman year we came in fourth place, and we had a great team then,” junior Caden Johnson said. “It feels good to know we have a young team here that has a lot of potential coming up.”
The Dragons play a total of four teams in their district. District standings are based on point differentials, so they play each team twice.
“I was really proud,” Scroggins said. “To go from learning the game to being district champs and runner-up in two years is a huge accomplishment.”
The boys lost only once to their rival Rockwall-Heath, which kept them in the lead for district champs all season. However, the girls lost both games to Rockwall-Heath, which dropped them to runner-up.
“I think we’re going to continue to have a great season next year,” Scroggins said. “Even though we’re losing some of our key players, we have some really good underclassmen coming in that are going to continue to grow and play a big part.”
Since the team’s creation, they’ve seen a huge performance improvement. In the previous two seasons of the team, they placed fourth in the district overall.
“This game doesn’t make us confident,” Johnson said. “From the beginning of the season, we’ve been confident. We know what we’re going to do, and we know that we have a good enough team to go as far as God’s plan has to take us.”
